1 On Writing Well Zinsser, William
HarperCollins Publishers September 1991 0062720279 / 9780062720276 Good Paperback
Amazon.com n nWhether you write an occasional professional letter or a daily newspaper column, William Zinsser's On Writing Well should be required reading. Simplicity is Zinsser's mantra: he preaches a stripped-down writing style, strong and clear. He has no patience for excess (most use of adjectives and adverbs, he writes, just adds clutter) or tired phraseology (for instance, he'd like to outlaw all leads involving those "future archaeologists" most often found "stumbl[ing] upon the remains of our civilization"). He recommends that all writers of nonfiction read their work aloud (don't commit something to paper that you wouldn't actually say) and write under the assumption that "the reader knows nothing" (not to be confused with assuming the reader's an idiot). In addition to the chapters on the expected--usage, audience, interviews, leads--Zinsser also focuses on such trouble spots as science and technical writing, business writing, sports, and humor. n--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. n n n --New York Times n n"On Writing Well belongs on any shelf of serious reference works for writers." n--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2 Speaking of Journalism : Twelve Writers and Editors Talk About Their Work Zinsser, William K.
Collins June 29, 1994 0062701150 / 9780062701152 Fair Hardcover
From Publishers Weekly n nFor a course on nonfiction writing he taught at the New School in Manhattan, Zinsser invited 11 of his former Yale students, who are now journalists, to talk "about how they work and what they believe." For aspiring and working journalists, and others curious about the field, these edited talks--divided into categories like politics, people, sports, social issues, etc.--make an instructive collection. The New Yorker 's Mark Singer relates that he reads fiction to help him to develop his own voice. Freelancer Jennifer Allen stresses that a fair-minded editor is more valuable than "all the exposure in the world." Newsweek 's Melinda Beck maintains that editors sometimes only become aware of issues when their friends call them to their attention. Zinsser adds a thoughtful postscript to each chapter; for example, recounting how he gathered emotional content for his book American Places and advising reporters to "push the boundaries of your subject." nCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.
